I've got a 77 440- punched .030 over, 9.5 to 1 comp, 3500 converter, alum six pack manifold- new, new six pack set up- the cam- 320 deg duration, 270 @.050, .550 lift, 104 centerline, lots of overlap. 5 in/ vac at idle. Can't idle at less than 1500, wants to stall when put in gear, ( probably normal) but it seems really rich- burns your eyes- even tho the center had 63 jets installed, center idle adjustment had not effect. Jetted it up to .69 in center. Set timing to 38 deg at 2200rpm, w/o vacuum connected. Seems better, but still lacks control from center carb adjustments, oh yeah, installed 2.5 pv. I previously had a 292/509 cam, idled choppy, went fine, wanted to step it up for that really radical thump. What kind of idle should I be looking for? I've added jettable plates to the secondaries and installed 88's all around to start. Should I be looking at drilling the center throttle pplates, or cracking the secondaries open slightly ) i've read lots of different views on this to bring in more air to correct the idle slot transfer) Strange thing the 6-packs, no-one here in winnipeg, canada seems to know how to tune them out- except for Brian Wall- and he wants 150 for the set up hout, then 100 for the next 4-6 hours- just to tune it ( although he has a dyno, and is recognized as one of the best) But I'd kinda like to do myself, incase I change something later on, then I'd be able to re-adjust. Where am I going wrong with the tune here

More reading today, Holley manuals, Mopar Perf. Manuals- ha- drilled out the main carbs throttle plates- added an 1/8 hole in each plate, lots better, went one size bigger- BINGO- Idle control back to the center carb, both outer carb throttle blades closed, all sync'd to spec- 85's in all secondaries, 68's in main, 2.5 pv. Short hops, 1st geat- no traction, blew to rev limiter, came to a stop, roll out easy, shift to second, lay on it, again, very slight bog, then sideways to the limiter, into third, sideways (trans is a 727 full manual valvebody, 3500 stall converter, 8 3/4 rear, 3.23 sure grip- 295-50-15 on 15x10 rims) This car is an animal! Am hooking up an a/f guage this week to finer tune it, but its close!

Anyone else have tuning issues like this, maybe I or we can help each other. I am a journeyman diesel mechanic, as well as over 20 years in the bodyshop, and countless hours custom fabbing and building all sorts or hot rods, need help, or maybe just time in and tell me where I've gone wrong or could improve. If there's one thing i've learned, its that you can never know everything!
